Dante’s ‘Inferno’ differs from its great classical predecessors in position/purpose. In Homer’s 'Odyssey' & Virgil’s 'Aeneid’ the visit to the land of the dead occurs in the middle of the poem. Dante transforms the practice by beginning the poem in the land of the dead.
