Interstitial lung disease

A group of disorders that cause progressive scarring of lung tissue.
  • Requires a medical diagnosis
  • Lab tests or imaging always required
  • Chronic: can last for years or be lifelong
Interstitial lung disease may be caused by long-term exposure to hazardous materials, such as asbestos or coal dust. Or, it can be caused by an autoimmune disease, such as rheumatoid arthritis. Once lung scarring occurs, it's generally irreversible.
Rare: Fewer than 200,000 US cases per year
