Yong tau foo (simplified Chinese: 酿豆腐; traditional Chinese: 釀豆腐; also spelled yong tao foo, yong tau fu, yong tau hu or yong tofu; ก๋วยเตี๋ยวแคะ in Thailand) is a Hakka Chinese dish consisting primarily of tofu filled with ground meat mixture or fish paste.

Ingredients. The uniqueness of Yong Tau Foo lies in its versatility. The dish typically consists of tofu, eggplant, bitter gourd, and other vegetables that are stuffed with a mixture of fish paste, meat, or vegetables. The stuffed ingredients are then boiled or fried and served with a soup or sauce.

Just put a little oil (~1 tsp.), add in the chopped garlic (~2Tbsp.) and fry until brown, then add in some water (~1/2 cup), hoisin sauce (~3 Tbsp.) and honey (~2 Tbsp.), stir well to mix and lastly thicken with a cornstarch mixture before adding in the yong tau foo to coat well.

Yong tow foo is a food of Hakka origin that has been passed down from generation to generation. The Hakkas are a group of “Han” Chinese originally active around the Yellow River area and have a staple diet of dumplings. After migrating South-ward, they found it difficult to get flour for the dumplings.
