Gerrit Dou was one of the most highly esteemed. Dutch painters of the seventeenth century, prized for his meticulous technique and illusionistic effects.
Dou became one of the highest paid artists in the Netherlands and the founder of the Leiden painters' guild. Royal patrons from all over Europe sought him out.
Dou painted perhaps a dozen or more self-portraits over the course of his life. This example is one of his latest, dating from about 1665.
