The exact cause of dermatitis herpetiformis isn't known. Genetics, gluten sensitivity, and disorders in which the immune system attacks healthy cells (autoimmune disorders) may play a role.
The main symptom is an off-and-on skin rash.
Antibiotics and a gluten-free diet are treatments.
Rare: Fewer than 200,000 US cases per year
