Malaria

Also called: plasmodium infection
An infection caused by a plasmodium parasite transmitted by the bite of infected mosquitoes.
  • Treatable by a medical professional
  • Requires a medical diagnosis
  • Lab tests or imaging always required
  • Short-term: resolves within days to weeks
Malaria mostly spreads to people through the bites of some infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. Blood transfusion and contaminated needles may also transmit malaria. Left untreated, P. falciparum malaria can progress to severe illness and death within 24 hours.
Symptoms are chills, fever and sweating, usually occurring a few weeks after being bitten.
Treatment includes antimalarial drugs and managing symptoms. Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for people travelling to areas where malaria is common.
Rare: Fewer than 1 million cases per year (India)
