Sector 5 is a mainly residential administrative area encompassing the colossal, extravagant Palace of Parliament, begun in the 1980s under Communist dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu. It hosts the National Contemporary Art Museum as well as the legislative assembly. On lush grounds, opulent Cotroceni Palace is the president’s residence and home to the Cotroceni National Museum, with painting, sculpture, and decorative arts.
