Juromenha

By the Guadiana River near the border with Spain, serene Juromenha is home to the imposing Juromenha Fortress, an abandoned medieval stronghold whose thick walls enclose the ruins of churches and a jail. Its ramparts offer sweeping views of rural Portuguese and Spanish landscapes. A handful of hotels and cozy restaurants offering regional cuisine sit near the Hermitage of Santo António, a 1700s baroque church.
