Lactaldehyde is an intermediate in the methylglyoxal metabolic pathway. Methylglyoxal is converted to D-lactaldehyde by glycerol dehydrogenase. Lactaldehyde is then oxidized to lactic acid by aldehyde dehydrogenase. Wikipedia
