Miyajima, or Itsukushima, is a semirural island with an iconic floating shrine where a giant red torii gate rises from the bay. Forest trails lead to other tranquil Shinto and Zen sites around the peak of Mt. Misen. Tsutsumigaura Nature Park has a protected beach, and families watch sea lion shows at Miyajima Aquarium. Old-style wooden shops and cafes sell oysters and hina folk dolls on lantern-lit Machiya Street.
