Get personalized actions, app suggestions, and more with Device Personalization Services

You can get suggestions while you use your phone based on how you use it.

Important: Some features are available only on some phones.

Types of suggestions your phone can give

Improved text suggestions
The info you copy and paste is never shared with Google, uploaded, or saved. Your data isn't shared with the keyboard or the app until you insert the suggestion.
How to use text you've selected
When you select text, your phone can suggest what to do next, like:
  • Copy or paste.
  • Open a related app.

For example, if you select a restaurant name, your phone could suggest opening a maps app so you can get travel directions.

When making a suggestion, your phone sometimes uses its approximate location. Learn how your phone finds its location.

Apps to open
Your phone can recommend apps that you may want to open. When suggesting apps, your phone uses this info:
  • Your phone's approximate location. Learn how your phone finds its location.
  • Whether or not the headphones are connected.
  • Time and date.
  • Apps you have opened.
  • How long you’ve used certain apps.

To make more helpful suggestions, your phone remembers its approximate location for 2 weeks, and other info for 5 weeks.

Keep your screen on

Screen Attention can prevent your screen from turning off when it detects that someone is looking at it. This function works even if you don't tap the screen. For example, your screen could stay on when you read the news, an e-book, or recipes on your phone.

Screen Attention uses the front camera to determine if someone is looking at the screen before it turns off. This function works only on your device, and images are never stored or sent to Google.

Actions related to your notifications

Sometimes a notification contains actionable info such as:

  • Addresses
  • Contact info
  • Package tracking numbers

Device Personalization Services adds smart action buttons to that notification to help you:

  • Get directions
  • Add contacts
  • Track packages

No data about these notifications will be shared with Google. Learn more about notifications.

Captions for your videos, podcasts, audio, and calls
When Live Caption is turned on, captions appear from any media or calls on your phone. Use it for things like videos, podcasts, voice calls, or video calls. All captions are processed on your phone. Live Caption is available only on Pixel 4a and later, including Fold. Learn more about Live Caption.
Now Playing

Now Playing compares a few seconds of music playing nearby to its on-device library to try to recognize the song, and displays it on your phone. All processing happens on your phone and is private to you.

To recognize songs better, Now Playing collects some info, like the percentage of times Now Playing correctly recognizes music. Now Playing collects this info if you have shared usage and diagnostics with Google. Learn how to update your usage and diagnostic settings.

Add a boarding pass with a screenshot
On Pixel 4a and later, including Fold, when you take a screenshot, you can add boarding passes to Google Pay. The boarding pass will appear as a notification, and before your flight, you can access it in the Power menu. Learn more about how to use flight or event tickets.

All info is encrypted when it's backed up. Learn about data backup on your Pixel phone .

Your phone may use privacy-preserving techniques like Federated Learning and Analytics to analyze and improve the performance of features. Learn about federated learning.

If you’ve opted into sending usage and diagnostic information to Google, some features will send anonymous data to evaluate performance and support future improvements. Learn how to share usage and diagnostics information with Google.
