Vitus refused to renounce his faith, and for this he was condemned to death by boiling in a cauldron of hot oil. This execution attempt failed, so instead a wild lion was set on Vitus, which he tamed with the sign of the cross. Vitus then voluntarily surrendered his soul to the angels on a riverbank, where he was guarded by an eagle until he was buried.
