"Unusually, this intimate devotional piece is painted on black marble, adding to its considerable impact as a ‘night-piece’. Lorenzo Giustiniani (1381-1455) was not in fact canonised until 1690, many years after this was painted; but he was already regarded as the first Patriarch of Venice, and his power of intercession with the Madonna and familiarity with the company of angels was not in doubt to any Venetian.
The painting was, until 1974, attributed to Alessandro Turchi, but is now correctly given to Ottino.

- Further Information: Ottino served his apprenticeship in Verona with Felice Brusasorci and by 1614 and acquired some reputation as a painter. His works suggest that he visited Bologna and he is also said to have visited Rome, though the date of this trip is uncertain. He otherwise was based in Verona. The sitter included in this holy scene, Lorenzo Giustiniani (1381-1455), entered the Augustinian monastery of San Giorgio in Alga, becoming general of the congregation; he was later appointed first bishop of Grado and from this derived the reputation of being the first Patriarch of Venice.
