Sculptural ceramic ceremonial vessel that represents a priest

This is a sculptural ceramic bottle depicting a priest seated on a stepped pyramid. He is holding a small lime-container. The lime was extracted with a stick which was then placed in the mouth of the person chewing the coca leaves, where it acted as a catalyst in the extraction of the alkaloid components from the coca leaf. The chacchado or chewing of the coca leaf is an ancient practice of the Andean region, which is practiced for ceremonial purposes and energizing. The coca leaf consumption is in this case associated with the need of the priest to stay awake during the night, when the stars can be "read" in the sky. This piece seems therefore to represent a stargazer priest in a temple, where they carried out the reading of the starry heavens. The technique (black piece inlaid with pearls), is associated to the subject represents (nocturnal world / starry sky). (UH)
Esta botella escultórica de cerámica representa a un personaje sentado sobre una pirámide escalonada. Sostiene un pequeño recipiente, contenedor de la cal que se ingiere en pequeñísima cantidad al masticar las hojas de coca, para facilitar la extracción de las sustancias alcalinas de la hoja. El chacchado o mascado de la hoja de coca es una práctica ancestral del área andina, que se realiza con fines ceremoniales y energizantes. El consumo de hoja de coca por este personaje estaría asociado a su necesidad de mantenerse en vigilia durante la noche, cuando las estrellas se pueden “leer” en el cielo. Esta pieza parece por lo tanto representar a un sacerdote observador de estrellas en un templo, lugar donde se llevaba a cabo la lectura de los cielos estrellados. La técnica (pieza negra con incrustaciones de nácar), está asociada al tema que se representa (mundo nocturno / cielo estrellado). (UH)
