The historic heart of the city, Mitte is full of restaurants, cafes, and department stores. Monuments dot the largely pedestrianized Altstadt area, and museums include the History Museum of Hanover and the Kestnergesellschaft, showing cutting-edge art in an old public bathhouse. To the south, Maschpark has a pond and the castlelike New Town Hall. Sprawling green spaces to the east include the Stadtpark and a zoo.
